GAMES A gaming technology review of a 3rd party add-on for the Nintendo DSi – the rather POINTLESS Blaze Nintendo DSi x3 Game Selector…

With this massive lump of plastic, you can save having the inconvenience of switching game carts out of your DS by having the futher inconvenience of turning off your console and flicking a switch on this add-on:

Technology Review: Pandora open source Handheld Console

TECH In this GamerDads Retrocast Technology review, resident tech head @moobit meets one of the creators of the Pandora open source handheld gaming console and mini PC and discusses its features and abilities.

This console, being open source can play ROMs of ANY game up to PS1 standard/equivalent PC standard, as well as it containing PC office software and media playback capabilities.

It was and is a very interesting console, but was according to reports dogged by long waiting list times once ordered from the company (due to not being mass produced on a huge scale). Some might say in 2013 that the Android platform offers a similar option to this console however any retro gamers and homebrew hackers should check the console out as it offers some great options even in today’s market…

The interview was originally filmed at the 2011 Replay Retro and current gen gaming expo at the Norbreck Castle Hotel Blackpool on 06 November 2011:

Pinball Table Review: “NBA Fast break” (Bally):

GAMESA quick video review of the excellent Bally Pinball table NBA Fastbreak as found at the Replay Expo…

Interesting fact about the tables found at this expo is that they had managed to link two Fastbreak tables together for simultaneous multiplayer! A world first for the expo back in 2011, it it now a staple of Pinball Tournaments…

GamerDads Retrocast Pinball Review: “Party Zone” (Bally):

Star Trek TNG Pinball review & my top 3 Pinball tables:

GAMES

Star Trek: The Next Generation Pinball (November 1993 by Williams Electronics)

At the 2012 PLAY expo, I found myself in Geek Heaven when I found one of my all time Favourite Pinball Tables – 1993’s Star Trek: the Next Generation (TNG).

The table is now available to buy as part of the “Pinball Arcade” videogame – available on Android, iOS, Xbox Live Arcade, and PS3 Network… although if you ask me – nothing beats the real – life table!

In the video we also talk about my top three tables of all time – HAUNTED HOUSE, WHITE WATER, and Star Trek: TNG!

Held in Manchester Event City (next to Trafford Shopping Centre), this HUGE expo contained 4 main areas – REplay (retro gaming), NOWplay (current Gen previews), COZplay, and PROplay (a dedicated area for competitive multiplayer gaming).

Our coverage contains videos on @gamerdadsUK and @retrocastUK, Podcasts (available on iTunes – search GAMERDADS), and writeups on http://www.gamerdads.co.uk

Pinball for the win!

GAMES

Pinball is a great love of mine… it combines Geekyness with skill in perfect harmony.

You have the tech in the electronics, the engineering in the table itself, the real sense of feedback when twonking a ball around with the flippers… it’s just perfect!

For me it HAS to be real tables. I like video game offerings (especially the recent “Pinball Arcade” on Android, iOS and Xbox/PS3 Arcade), but nothing beats the feeling of a real table…

Whilst visiting the PLAY expo (formally known as the Replay expo), I got to indulge myself in one of my all time great loves-one that unfortunately these days I do not get much of a chance to partake in after a vast decline in it’s popularity…
The expo and others like it always put several Pinball tables on show and depressingly it is hard enough to come across ONE pinball table these days… I live in a medium sized City and I can tell you that to my Knowledge there is only ONE Pinball table in the whole city and I know exactly where it is-such is my obsession (there used to be two-on opposite ends of the city, but I believe one broke down and was bought by a collector…).

With that in mind, here are a pair of videos giving a sweep of one section of the replay expo floor – these are some of the best tables ever made. The videos give an overview and a pan across each table. In the interests of shortness, I have included some very basic information about each table, as you can easily find out all the detailed information you need from the net (I would recommend http://www.ipdb.org).

The tables in the videos are:

Black rose
Roadshow
Party zone
Jungle lord
Gorgar
Terminator 2
Terminator 3
White water
Bram stokers Dracula
Back to the future
Family guy

Kodak Zi8 Mini HD Camcorder: Microphone input test using a guitar.

YouTube

I recently bought the Kodak Zi8 mini HD camcorder for use when recording my show for gamerdads.co.uk-the Retrocast, and also for use as a “Guerilla Filmmaking” HD cam at gaming expos where I have to interview various people and don’t have space for a full sized camera and crew.

The main selling point for me on this camera is the fact that it is one of the only HD mini camcorders that has a “Microphone In” jack-perfect for me for the uses described above! 🙂

In this test-I also found that as well as microphones, you could plug anything you like into the camera and it will pick up and record at a decent sound quality-there are other videos on YouTube showing Electronic Drums plugged into the Zi8, so I thought I’d try my electro-acoustic guitar… these are the results…

REFLECTOR app for PC/Mac – record and screen capture your iOS device!

APPbuttonA quick video showing you how to screen capture and record your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch screen on your PC via Airplay – using the Refelector app for PC and Mac!

Great for making app tutoral or iPad gameplay videos – simply start the software on your PC, start Airplay on your iOS device, and your iPad screen streams to your PC screen – letting you record your iOS screen using the built-in recording software.

Look for the full review of the PC software/app here on my blog and in the reviews section of http://www.gamerdads.co.uk
